Iona College has officially opened the Zinelli Building, the new three-storey primary learning facility delivered by Tomkins on time and within budget under a Design and Construct contract.
The team was thrilled to join Iona College for the grand opening of the Zinelli Building, a celebration of the newest addition to the Wynnum college’s Primary campus and of the partnership that delivered it.
Completed in March 2024, the three-storey general learning area building provides two general learning areas per level along with four flexible learning classrooms, supported by verandas, outdoor learning spaces and a lift providing accessibility across all levels. A large amenities block sits on the lower ground floor.
The building works harder than its classroom count suggests. The undercroft beneath the structure provides additional recreational space with easy access to the college’s sporting fields, improving amenity for students and weekend visitors alike, while a new covered walkway connects the facility to existing buildings across the campus. All landscaping surrounding the building was completed by the Tomkins team.
Building within a working school shaped the entire delivery approach. Construction was carefully staged around classroom hours and school holidays to minimise disruption to students’ education, with monthly stakeholder meetings and site walkthroughs held throughout the build to keep the project aligned with the college’s requirements. The project also created opportunities for local businesses to contribute to the works.
The Zinelli Building is the second major project delivered for Iona College, following the Provence Centre, and its completion on time and within budget reflects the trusted, ongoing relationship between the builder and the college.
With the ribbon now cut, the building begins its real work, providing generations of Iona’s primary students a modern, flexible place to learn.
