PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Tomkins constructed a radiation therapy bunker at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) for Metro North Health, located adjacent to the Joyce Tweddell Cancer Care facility. The scope covered construction of a waterproof reinforced concrete shell to house radiation therapy equipment, with fitout delivered under a separate contract. The project was executed in a constrained below-ground environment within an active hospital campus, requiring close coordination with hospital operations to minimise disruption to patients and clinical staff.

The bunker was constructed below ground level on an operational hospital internal roadway, immediately adjacent to an active cancer care ward. With patients in recovery only metres from the work face, all activities were strictly scheduled around hospital operational hours, and concrete pours were timed to limit noise from truck movements, pumping plant and concrete vibration.

The structural specification required 1.0-metre-thick reinforced concrete walls and roof, with 30mm thick steel plates cast into the ceiling to provide the radiation shielding performance required by the clinical brief. Achieving a waterproof concrete shell to this standard, within the constraints of a live hospital environment, demanded rigorous quality controls across every pour.

Bulk and detailed excavation was completed under a separate prior contract. Tomkins’ scope commenced with the concrete structure and was followed by fitout works as a further separable portion, allowing the client to coordinate equipment procurement and clinical fit-out independently.

The completed radiation therapy bunker at RBWH gives the Joyce Tweddell Cancer Care facility the shielded clinical infrastructure needed to operate modern radiation therapy equipment. Delivered within a live hospital environment with minimal disruption to patient care, the project demonstrates Tomkins' capability in technically demanding, operationally constrained healthcare construction.
