PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Tomkins delivered a purpose-built aviation maintenance and operations facility for GE Aviation at Brisbane Airport, on behalf of long-term client Brisbane Airport Corporation. The development comprises a 3,312m² high-bay warehouse, a 1,284m² specialist workshop and a two-level 2,028m² office building — totalling approximately 3,500m² under roof. Constructed under a Design & Construct contract, this facility was the 11th project Tomkins has delivered for Brisbane Airport Corporation and represents a significant capability uplift for GE Aviation’s Asia-Pacific operations. The facility supports GE’s ongoing maintenance work on Boeing 737s, C-130J Super Hercules and C-27J Spartan Military Transport Aircraft for the Royal Australian Air Force and is positioned to become a new regional service centre for the Asia-Pacific.

The GE Aviation Facility required an extensive site preparation programme before any structural work could commence. Tomkins completed approximately 30,000m³ of cut-to-fill earthworks across the site, followed by ground remediation piling to achieve the engineered bearing capacity required for the facility’s high-bay warehouse and loaded workshop floors.

The warehouse is designed to accommodate the movement of large aviation components, with a full-width overhead gantry crane facilitating material handling between delivery areas, storage zones, specialist workshops and the spray booth. The workshop includes a designated propeller workshop with an integrated spray booth for propeller painting, dirty areas available for sandblasting and a separate 480m² avionics workshop with a dedicated battery room. Temperature control systems were installed throughout the workshop to meet GE’s strict operational requirements.

The two-level office building provides 2,028m² of accommodation for GE’s operational and engineering teams. Both levels are accessible by stairs and elevator. A mezzanine level overlooking the warehouse provides additional storage and supervisory oversight of workshop operations below.

The building’s exterior features painted concrete tilt panel walls, aluminium glazing systems and Colorbond roof and wall cladding. The workshop elevation is finished with a bold geometric colour panel feature — incorporating GE Aviation’s brand palette of red, blue and white — creating a distinctive industrial identity on the Brisbane Airport precinct. External services infrastructure, including large-diameter stainless steel exhaust stacks and mechanical ductwork are integrated into the building’s roofline. A dedicated fire pump room and above-ground fire water storage tank are located adjacent to the facility.

The completed facility significantly enhances GE Aviation’s local capabilities, enabling greater specialisation across avionics, electrical power systems, DOWTY flight management and propeller systems. It supports GE’s existing military and commercial aircraft maintenance programmes and positions the Brisbane Airport site as a new service centre for the Asia-Pacific region.

“
The various departments have expressed that they are beyond impressed with the design and workmanship of the development.
