PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Tomkins delivered a purpose built mosque and community facility for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association at Stockleigh, south of Brisbane. The growing community had been operating from an existing residential building on its 14,850m² rural zoned property and needed a permanent home designed specifically for prayer, gathering and community life.

Won through a competitive tender and refined through a collaborative Value Engineering phase with the client, the project draws on the form and character of traditional Byzantine architecture. Persian arches, geometric motifs, domed copulas and a minaret give the community a building that reflects its identity while serving its everyday needs.

The facility gives the association the space to bring its community together and to plan for its future.

Creating the character of traditional Byzantine architecture on a community budget was the central challenge of the project. Without the scope for the detailed mosaic works and intricate decorative plaster filigree of historic examples, the project team worked closely with the client to achieve a comparable result through disciplined, buildable means.

Precast concrete tilt-up wall panels were cast with a series of geometric motifs and the distinctive Persian arch forms, giving the building its architectural identity directly through its structure. A low pitch contemporary roof allowed the main hall to be delivered as a completely column free space, creating an open, flexible interior for prayer and large community gatherings.

A reduced scale minaret was constructed adjacent to the main building, with prefabricated fibreglass copulas crowning both the minaret and the main roof. Installing these units required strict adherence to the design criteria to ensure adequate connection, support, and weatherproofing without compromising the integrity of the fibreglass shells.

Internally, the large open meeting hall is centred on the main roof copula, expressed as a recessed circular ceiling feature and finished with decorative plasterwork and feature lighting. The result is a facility that delivers the spirit of its architectural tradition with the practicality of modern construction.

The completed facility gives the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association a permanent place of worship and gathering, replacing the converted residence the community had outgrown. With a column free main hall, on-site parking and accessible entry, the mosque provides a welcoming setting for daily prayer, community events and future growth. This stands as a distinctive landmark for the Stockleigh community.

The project was awarded the 2014 Master Builders Queensland Gold Coast Housing & Construction Award for Sporting & Community Service Facilities up to $5 million.
