Tomkins has completed construction on a three-storey Science Block extension and refurbishment of existing classrooms for Moreton Bay Boys College in Manly West. Tomkins’ scope of work included the demolition of existing outer block façade wall while the building remained operational with classes each day. This then had to be weatherproofed to ensure classrooms remained operational while the new structure was being built. The new three-storey extension structure was built to match in with the existing buildings dimensions and appearance to appear as one building, and included multiple classrooms and a fully suspended structural steel portal frame link bridge for accessibility compliance.
The internal science fit-out included gas turrets to each desk, emergency shut-off devices, operational fume cupboards, emergency eyewash/shower facilities, chemical resistant joinery fit-out and acid/chemical resistant sanitary fixtures and fittings. The refurbishment of the existing science classrooms included a full services relocation and needed to be handed over well before the new extension was completed. A challenge Tomkins is very experienced with, construction works took place in a live school environment with classes taking place on the other side of the dividing walls. Tomkins’ working relationships were maintained throughout the course of the works with the College being extremely happy with the professionalism and workmanship displayed throughout the works.
