The completion of the 1300sqm refurbishment and extension of the University of Queensland”s JK Murray Library will now revitalise existing facilities and provide additional space, including a fresh and modern 24/7 student study centre.

To accommodate for the growth of the university, our scope of work encompassed the refurbishment and extension of the existing library. The library now has larger learning spaces to accommodate for students needs along with additional resources for the university staff. The demolition works required on the existing two-storey, concrete, brick and steel development built in 1973 included existing footpaths, stairs, bathrooms, office spaces, ceilings and partition walls. This accommodated for the new office spaces, amenities, new finishes, a large amount of high spec furniture, lifts, heat pumps and chillers that will now service both the new and existing developments. In addition to the demolition works, the entrance to the existing loggia was reconstructed to include new stairs, a ramp and a structural steel shade with aluminium battens. Working within an active environment is a challenge that Tomkins is well versed in and The University of Queensland remained operational throughout the course of works without any disruption to sensitive exam periods. The Tomkins team completed the project within schedule while maintaining a synergetic relationship with the client resulting in repeat works for the UQ Gatton campus.
